Relationship Manager for Financial Sponsors and Family Offices in the Financial Institutions team in Amsterdam

The Financial Institutions (FI) sector coverage team offers an exciting position in Amsterdam for a seasoned professional who enjoys working in a commercial environment. The Financial Institutions organisation is the largest of the global specialist sector teams at the heart of ING Wholesale Banking. The team provides financial services to banks, insurers, financial sponsors, family offices, pension funds, asset managers and other financial institutions from 40+ locations globally.

In line with our global initiative to develop our financial sponsor related business, the team in the Netherlands intends to expand its coverage to include both the local operations of the Global Financial Sponsors as well as the Dutch headquartered Financial Sponsors, and selected Family Offices (FS&FO’s). As a relationship manager, you will play a key role in initiating, developing and managing the relationships with these clients in our most important home market.

FS&FO’s are a growing and evolving sub-sector that require the full spectrum of Wholesale Banking products which you will deliver in close cooperation with the various product and Sector teams to explore and maximise cross-buy opportunities at manager, fund and portfolio company level. This involves regular interaction with Acquisition Finance, Corporate Finance, Fund Finance, Lending, Financial Markets, Transaction Services (including Payments and Trade Finance) and other Sector teams, as well as relevant colleagues in Business Banking.

Job description

You will be responsible for client relationship development for all clients allocated to you. You will maintain an active dialogue and play a leading role in transactions which have a large impact on our clients. You will work closely together with various product specialists across ING. In all your activities you will strive to meet client needs in the best way, using all of ING’s products, knowledge, and international network. Your main tasks consist of:

Client coverage:

  • Undertake senior banker role for FS&FO clients with the ability to have strategy discussions with senior stakeholders, owning the relationship with the client
  • Grow selected client relationships with senior stakeholders on client side on a portfolio of FS&FO’s
  • Identify and drive cross-buy opportunities, contributing to the origination efforts with analyses, presentations, and pitch books.
  • Maintaining active contacts with other departments within ING. Organize and set up internal deal teams to drive and coordinate origination
  • In respect of the Global Financial Sponsors active in the Netherlands, work in close cooperation with the relevant relationship bankers based in other countries
  • Support commercial and credit committee applications
  • Mentor junior team members

Portfolio and data management:

  • Supervise and contribute to account planning and performance reviews in order to allocate scarce resources in the right relationships and optimize portfolio management with the objective to deliver on KPIs
  • Be a member of, and coordinate commercial activities with, the Financial Sponsors Group which is primarily based in London
  • Contribute to KYC efforts as part of the overall client relationship and ensure adherence to all non-financial risk requirements and policies

Internal Management:

  • In close cooperation with a.o. Acquisition Finance, Corporate Finance, Private Banking, and Business Banking teams covering some of the portfolio companies in the Netherlands, help to set the strategy for, and drive the execution of, ING’s business with FS&FO clients
  • Liaise laterally and vertically with senior stakeholders, peers and juniors to drive the client dialogue

Your work environment

You will be a member of the global Financial Institutions sector organisation which consists of dedicated professionals located in the world’s major financial centres.

You will functionally report to the Global Head Financial Sponsors Group (FSG), based in London. FSG develops our Financial Sponsor clients portfolio globally and coordinates across products and geographies to explore and maximize cross-buy opportunities.

You will be a member of the Dutch FI Coverage team and hierarchically report to the Head of FI Coverage Netherlands and Nordics. The team in Amsterdam has a leading position in the Dutch financial sector, covering banks, insurers, pension funds and fintechs in the Netherlands and Nordics as well as banks in Israel and Northern-Africa.

Who are we looking for

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Preferably network of existing relationships within Dutch FS&FO universe
  • Knowledge of relevant FS&FO product suite with appetite to develop in particular fields
  • Minimum 10 years commercial experience primarily in Wholesale
    Banking, with a preference for Corporate Finance and/or Acquisition Finance background; Financial Markets and Transaction Services knowledge is also relevant
  • Credit risk experience

Personal Competencies:

  • Commercial savviness to trace opportunities in client universe and build relationships with senior client counterparts
  • Energy to drive transactions and result orientation
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and multiple stakeholder environment, both internally and externally
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and tenacity
  • Fluent in English, both verbally and written – fluency in other languages much appreciated, in particular in Dutch
