The team

Finance Business Advice (FBA) is a partner to the business, guiding and supporting it in achieving its financial targets. Our  work is built on three pillars:

1. Setting Financial Targets: Developing a three-year plan with bank-wide financial goals.

2. Tracking Progress: Monitoring these targets through detailed management reports.

3. Providing Financial Advice: Offering recommendations for initiatives that support achieving these targets.

FBA is organized into seven teams mirroring the organization of ING NL — two responsible for comprehensive bank-wide view (A), three responsible for the distinct business lines (B), and two responsible for the functional lines (C). The teams are as follows :-

1. Central Advice & Planning (A) – Responsible for full ING NL financials.

2. Data & Services (A) – Responsible for processing of data in the ING NL and Group systems and Data-based analysis and reporting for the department

3. Private Individuals & Private Banking (B) – Responsible for the full P&L of the named business segments

4. Business Banking (B) - Responsible for the full P&L of the named business segment

5. Wholesale Banking (B) - Responsible for the full P&L of the named business segment

6. COO & Tech (C) – Responsible for the full cost base of Operations and Technology
7. Support Functions (C) – Responsible for the full cost base of all functions excluding Operations & Technology.

Roles and responsibilities

As an intern in the Finance Business Advice (FBA) department, you will be assigned to various teams based on your knowledge, skills, and proficiencies. This rotational approach is designed to maximize your potential and create the biggest possible impact. The work for the intern is designed in such a way that they develop knowledge about the banking market and the strategy of the business, develop an understanding of the day-to-day work of the department, and make an impact to the bank through innovation / improvement / change initiative(s).

With the above goals in sight, your work is structured as follows

1. Understand the processes and content of approx. 4 distinct products and functions.

2. Document the relevant process/ data flows

3. Develop improvement / automation ideas to make the processes / content more usable

4. The ideas should lead to better efficiencies and business decisions

5. Prepare an Implementation Plan

6. Implement the Plan

Note that it is important to understand the content (the products and functions) and its relevance to business decisions before Step 3 is performed.

Examples of recent internship projects

1. Automate the process for collecting monthly and quarterly non-financial key performance indicators from more than ten different sources.

2. Automate the monthly reporting of staff movements between departments using  Python.

3. Simplify the process of collecting sub-product level income indicators for a major product group.

4. Conducted statistical analyses on mortgage interests and market shares, created a financial health model to improve customer profitability, and analyzed mortgage funding profiles.

5. Building a new, detailed sales forecasting model for one of ING’s retail products.

• Master or Bachelor (third-year) student
• Strong interest in Finance, Economics, Business Administration
• Strong communication skills
• High ambition and energy level

• Project management skills
• Fluency in business English
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PPT, VBA); knowledge of programming an advantage
