Global Head of Model Validation Trading Book

Model Validation Trading Book (MVTB) is a culturally diverse international team (tribe) of approximately 60 highly qualified professionals, located in Amsterdam, Warsaw and Singapore. The team is responsible for validating the models used for market risk, counterparty credit risk, pricing and valuation used by ING worldwide. We perform an important role in safeguarding the quality of models, and position ourselves as an independent, pro-active, strategic partner on ING’s models.

ING is looking for an experienced leader for the tribe. We are looking for someone with strong presence and strategic vision and a determination to improve and innovate. You have deep expertise in international financial markets, related models and relevant regulations, who can lead an international team of high value specialists.

The team

MVTB is part of ING’s global Model Risk Management (MoRM) department. Other Tribes in the MoRM domain are Model Risk Oversight and Model Validation tribes for Banking Book Risks, Credit Risk, and Business & Operational Analytics. Our main stakeholders are within ING’s Financial Markets Trading front office and Risk Management departments worldwide, ING’s senior management, internal and external auditors, the ECB and other regulators.

The Global Head of MVTB (or Tribe Lead MVTB) reports hierarchically to the Global Head of Model Risk Management and is part of the MoRM Leadership Team. To ensure its independence and effective challenge, the Global Head of MoRM reports directly to the Group CRO.

Roles and responsibilities

You will be responsible for the team in all 3 locations

As Tribe Lead you will:

  • Lead a global team of highly qualified Model Validation specialists, developing a high-performing team where people are empowered, learn and develop;

  • Contribute to the (overarching) strategy of the MoRM domain, translate that into a long-term global vision and strategy for the tribe and drive its execution;

  • Hold end-to-end responsibility for future proof model validation frameworks for models in scope and ensure a risk-based validation strategy;

  • Lead the Model Validation Trading Book agenda/planning and adequately present and defend high quality validation reports in ING’s model approval committees;

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand the forward-looking model strategies to support ING’s business objectives, and be a partner that gives direction while remaining your independence;

  • Innovate, automate and standardise the Model Validation activities to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the validation function;

  • Keep abreast of relevant external developments, best practices and regulations and translate those to tangible actions;

  • Support continuous ECB Inspections & internal and external audits and ensure proper and timely follow up on related remediation plans;

  • Manage the budget for the MVTB Tribe.

You:

  • Have at least 10-15 years of managerial experience in the financial markets area, in-depth knowledge of products traded, corresponding risks, regulations and models, and proven experience in leading complex and regulatory driven programs;

  • Collaborate and build relationships with internal stakeholders, and with external parties like regulators, supervisors and auditors;

  • Are able to navigate different perspectives and manage conflicts professionally;

  • Are good at conflict management, and decisive in promoting a Risk/Modelling Culture across the organisation;

  • Have the ability to switch easily between strategic impacts with stakeholders and technical or operational level towards your teams;

  • Drives towards meaningful and sustainable impact with determination in a persistent and constructive manner;

  • Demonstrate a high level of self-awareness, use feedback and reflection and are able to adjust behaviour where needed;

  • Have excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing.

Your main base is Amsterdam, with occasional travel.

Please note that the appointment procedure includes an assessment by an external provider, as well as a security screening by ING’s internal Corporate Security Investigations team.
