Senior Software Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Software engineer - Service Mesh at ING, you’ll help shape the foundation that thousands of engineers rely on every day. We're building the next-gen Touchpoint Mesh, a platform that powers secure, reliable, and scalable communication between services across the bank. You’ll face real architecture challenges, work with technologies like Envoy, Go, and Scala, and contribute to a platform that has a direct impact on ING’s global tech landscape.

The team

Join the Helios team, where you'll play a key role in expanding, building, and maintaining ING's Service Mesh, known as the Touchpoint Mesh. To enable this, the team is developing a new Sidecar application using the Envoy proxy to assist thousands of other applications within the ING ecosystem to communicate with each other. The new Sidecar provides built-in Touchpoint Mesh connectivity through a combination of features, allowing applications to benefit from the security and resilience features provided by the Touchpoint Mesh.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Service Mesh Engineer:

• Your work will focus on building and maintaining the new Envoy Sidecar and contributing to ING’s Service Mesh.
• You are a highly skilled Software Engineer looking forward to building robust, secure and efficient software. You know multiple languages and technologies, and you are excited to learn and code in Go and Scala.
• You are an experienced DevOps engineer who is not afraid to get your hands dirty when it comes to automating, optimizing, and tuning the platform from multiple angles: observability and monitoring, CI/CD, configuration, and other automations.
• You are an ambassador of Envoy Sidecar within ING, eager to expand its user base in the bank. Focusing on applications that want to use the Sidecar pattern for the first time or need to migrate from the JVM Sidecar to Envoy Sidecar.
• You are eager to provide support to users of Envoy Sidecar.
• You are capable of leading conversations about relevant technologies, learning new ones, and constantly sharing knowledge with the team.

Your key competencies / skills:

• A degree in computer science or a comparable education on an academic level.
• Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience building microservices and as a DevOps.
• Work experience in Go or Scala development is a plus. Interest in learning them in a short amount of time is a requirement.
• Professional experience with at least three programming languages. Examples include Go, Scala, C++, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, etc.
• Experience with Envoy proxy is a plus.
• Experience with Twitter Finagle is a plus.
• Experience with Platform development and Service Mesh is a plus.
• Experience working on an (internal) open-source project offering support to other teams/colleagues.
• Strong communication and good social skills.
• Excellent spoken and written English.
