Chapter Lead Java Engineering

The Tribe DevEx & System Engineering is part of Engineering & Reliability, focusing on driving end-to-end system optimization, increasing engineering productivity, ensuring operational efficiency, and delivering software with excellence. We ensure the development and implementation of policies, controls, and practices that define guardrails in how engineers design, build, and ultimately release software.

As a Chapter Lead, you will be joining the System Engineering IT Area. This area is part of the tribe and delivers opinionated integration patterns, focuses on standardizing development, deployment, and integration of different component types (API, Web Components, Database Schemas, etc.), and provides default pipelines and Golden Paths.

Our products (e.g., API SDK, Service Mesh, API Gateway, API Management) are used by over 10,000 engineers at ING around the globe and serve as a foundation for almost 2,000 microservices, delivering business value to our customers.

As a Chapter Lead at System Engineering:

  • You work with your peers to overcome challenges and, collectively, do a better job. You co-create the area vision, nurture innovation within it and effectively resource the System Engineering area and squads.

  • You are in this role also a hands-on DevOps engineer and a part-time squad member and continue to apply your specific expertise to your squad’s backlog.

  • Together with your fellow Chapter Leads and Product Owners, you help others to be more successful by focusing on craftsmanship, improving and sharing the Way of Work, and creating high performing teams.

  • You are the hierarchical lead of your chapter (+/- 10fte), you support and develop your colleagues through effective knowledge sharing and resource usage and promote the Agile WoW culture.

  • You are the lead for performance management, training plans, remuneration and daily people management for your chapter. You ensure the tribe and squads have the right people and skills and develop the members of your chapter.

  • You lead the chapter meet-up and ensure way of work-related information is shared and craftsmanship improved.

  • You analyze market trends and derive the relevant and for the future necessary adjustments in the craftsmanship.

Your key competencies / skills:

  • A degree in computer science or a comparable education on an academic level

  • 5+ years of Java software engineering experience, preferable Java 17 or later version, building microservices

  • Preferably experience with some of the following: Docker, Scala, Go, Azure DevOps, K8 / OpenShift, Apache Kafka and Pacts (contract testing)

  • Preferably experience with the Open Source way of working

  • You have a good understanding of Software Architecture

  • Excellent team player in an international team, quality focused, service oriented, eager to learn

  • Managerial experience within an agile organization, and inspiration to continuing working in this matter. Preferable in a similar role

  • You are able to discuss with your stakeholders and product owner about features and stories and can translate these into software with real business value

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong people management skills. Able to lead and inspire a group of senior developers

  • Excellent oral and written English skills
