Role

As a Financial Control intern, you will support the Financial Reporting – Wholesale Banking team in maintaining reliable accounting and reporting for Wholesale Banking Netherlands. You will work with financial data, help perform analytical reviews and support the documentation and follow-up of financial and regulatory controls. The internship offers a practical introduction to finance control within an international bank, with room to learn, ask questions and take ownership of clearly defined deliverables.

The team

The Financial Reporting – Wholesale Banking team is part of ING Netherlands Finance. The team is responsible for the accuracy of accounting and reporting for a portfolio of Wholesale Banking entities and works closely with COO Finance, Group Finance, Risk and other finance stakeholders. Our work combines financial analysis, reporting oversight, control execution and continuous improvement. We value teamwork, professional judgement, clear communication and a strong audit trail.

Key responsibilities

Financial analysis & reporting: Support monthly and quarterly analysis of balance-sheet and profit-and-loss movements; investigate notable variances and help turn findings into concise, understandable commentary.

Financial control execution: Assist with selected control activities, reconciliations, completeness checks and review evidence under the guidance of experienced controllers.

Data quality & documentation: Collect, structure and validate input data; maintain supporting documentation and help ensure that evidence is complete, traceable and stored appropriately.

Process improvement: Identify opportunities to simplify recurring work, improve templates or strengthen instructions, and help translate ideas into practical improvements.

Stakeholder collaboration: Coordinate follow-up items with colleagues in the Wholesale Banking Finance team, COO Finance and other internal stakeholders; prepare clear status updates and meeting materials.

Learning assignment: Complete an internship research or professional product that connects your academic programme with a relevant financial-control challenge.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or a related field.

  • Comfortable working with Excel; experience with PowerPoint and data-analysis tools is an advantage.

  • Accurate and structured, with attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality documentation.
