Internship: ESG Integration in Credit Risk for Dutch Mortgages (ING NL)

Roles and Responsibilities

Are you passionate about sustainability, data, and finance? ING Netherlands is looking for a motivated intern to support the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into our credit risk framework for Dutch mortgage loans.

As part of this internship, you will work on a pioneering project that aims to enhance how we assess and manage credit risk by incorporating ESG-related data—especially focusing on environmental transition risks and their impact on customer financial health.

What You’ll Be Working On

  • Data Research & Analysis
    Investigate and analyze ESG-related data, particularly from the CFP database (~50 fields on energy labels and property characteristics in the Netherlands).

  • Data Quality Assessment
    Evaluate the relevance and quality of ESG data for credit risk purposes.

  • Model Development Support
    Help develop and test data-driven logics to quantify the impact of transition risks (e.g., energy inefficiency) on financial health and creditworthiness.

  • Scenario Testing & Evaluation
    Contribute to Champion/Challenger model comparisons and back-testing using historical mortgage data (3–4 years).

  • Social Risk Exploration
    Support ING’s ambition to monitor and improve customer financial health through ESG-aligned risk segmentation.

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree inEconomics, Finance, Data Science, Sustainability, or a related field

  • Strong interest inESG, credit risk, and data analytics

  • Experience withdata analysis tools(e.g., Python, R, SQL, Excel) is a plus

  • Analytical mindset and attention to detail

  • Proactive, curious, and eager to learn
