ING’s growing Wholesale Banking franchise is seeking to appoint a Managing Director, Head of Energy to lead our Energy Sector Coverage team based in Sydney.

The Energy Sector Coverage team partners with wholesale clients across the full global energy value chain—spanning Renewables & Power, Utilities, and Hydrocarbons & New Energies. With teams across APAC, EMEA, and the Americas, we support clients involved in generation, production, processing, transportation and distribution, while also advancing emerging zero‑carbon technologies such as green molecules, CCUS, and long‑duration energy storage.

As Head of Energy Sector Coverage, you will drive the growth and strategic development of ING’s Energy franchise in Australia. You will manage a high‑performing team of sector bankers and lead client engagement across the full Wholesale Banking product suite, delivering P&L, deepening client relationships, and ensuring seamless collaboration with global product and country teams.

This role combines business leadership with senior client coverage responsibilities, requiring strong sector insight, commercial acumen, and a commitment to delivering ING’s global Energy strategy locally. You will also ensure alignment with all relevant policies, processes, and risk frameworks while fostering a culture of high performance.

What you’ll do

  • Drive Business Growth: Develop and maintain a clear, forward‑looking strategy for the profitable growth of ING’s Energy Sector business in Australia. Ensure alignment with Australia’s local strategy as well as regional and global Energy sector priorities. Represent ING across the market to elevate our brand and capabilities.
  • Lead Sector Insight & Opportunity Identification: Stay ahead of industry trends by actively monitoring developments across the Energy sector. Build deep expertise on competitors, products, and macroeconomic drivers, and contribute to broader ING strategic initiatives.
  • Originate & Manage Client Relationships: Act as a senior relationship manager, originating and expanding long‑term, profitable partnerships with key Australian energy clients. Oversee client identification, onboarding, and ongoing relationship management in close collaboration with ING’s product and country teams.
  • Lead the Energy Sector Team: Manage all Energy Sector team members in Australia, ensuring delivery of key business KPIs—including income, ESG outcomes, cross‑sell, returns, and other financial/non‑financial metrics.
  • Develop HighPerforming Talent: Provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and mentorship to build a culture of high performance and support the professional development of the team.
  • Uphold Governance & Compliance: Implement ING’s global commercial and risk appetite for the Energy Sector, as applicable to the Australian energy market.
  • Disciplined Risk Stewardship: Strategically manage the Sector’s risk exposure portfolio and maintain a strong credit culture within the team.
  • Proactive Stakeholder Management: Working in a matrix organization, proactively engage with stakeholders, driving alignment to support business objectives.

What we’re looking for

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant banking / energy industry experience
  • Degree in Economics / Mathematics / Engineering / Finance / Accounting
  • C-suite client contacts and professional relationships in the Energy sector
  • Experience in working with clients in the Energy sector in Australia and/or globally, with a strong track record in origination, structuring/execution and client management
  • Strong commercial acumen, leadership, communication, and presentation skills with proven experience in structuring, credit and deal execution. Strong track record in delivering and cross-selling an entire suite of wholesale banking products
  • A proven team manager with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experienced working in a matrix organization and well-versed in stakeholder management
  • Motivated, a commitment to excellence and having a “can do” attitude
